Dorm Shopping 2026: Sellouts, Price Hikes and What To Buy Now

June 2, 2026

If you’re shopping for college dorm essentials on a budget, timing is everything. Based on years of tracking pricing patterns (and helping late-season frenzied shoppers), here’s what to know for 2026.

We’ve tracked hundreds of the most popular (and highest-quality, non-toxic) dorm essentials since 2022. Things were pretty consistent year over year, but in 2026, some strange things are happening at Target and Walmart, and we’re already experiencing sell-outs at Amazon in May.

This article covers the 18 dorm items that consistently either increase in price as we go through the summer dorm shopping season or sell out entirely.

We’re not saying you need everything on this list. But if any of these are on your dorm must-have list, consider this your early warning system to save money and avoid the late-summer disappointment of lower-quality, more expensive alternatives.

Dorm Essentials That Get More Expensive, Sell Out, Or Both, Each Summer

1) Tall Charging Nightstands: Price increases & sell-outs happen early

We love the Huuger 5-Drawer Charging Nightstands. At 39.4″ tall, they’re the perfect height for a captain’s height (not fully lofted) dorm bed.

The white version went in and out of stock in the summer of 2025, then came back, jumping from $49 to over $80, and if you could find it, it was nearly $100 by move-in time. In 2026, all colors have already sold out, but we’re seeing the white and black Huuger’s come back in limited quantities here and there. If you see it in stock, don’t hesitate! We do expect some small restocks during the summer – we’ll let you know in our Facebook group and in Instagram stories.

2) Desk Hutches: Price increases and sell-outs happen early

Affordable, well-sized hutches for dorm desks are hard to find and often don’t go on sale. Be sure to check your desk size on your school housing page, and note that a few schools provide desk hutches as part of the furniture package.

  • Hutch for desks 32”+ wide – this is a great option for desks 32″+. The white ones go REALLY early!
  • DormCo options rarely go on sale but shouldn’t increase in price. Colors will sell out as we get into summer.

3) Furniture-Style Twin Headboards: Price increases and sell-outs happen early

Every year, the same thing happens. Reasonable prices in the spring ($60-75) will slowly rise to over $100 and eventually sell out. Please help us avoid those panicked posts in August looking for headboards – you need to shop early for these!

Our list of 15 favorite dorm headboards includes many that come in different colors, so click into the styles you like to see the color. For Twin XL beds, you need a Twin headboard – the bed width is the same for both.

Please see this article for a quick answer to how to attach a dorm headboard.

4) Over-Fridge Shelving: Price increases and sell-outs happen early

We love the Honey Can Do shelving (specific unit, see below) for a vertical dorm kitchen. We have not seen the big sales in the spring as we have in prior years, which has me concerned about inventory levels and rising summer prices.

  • White or Chrome Honey Can Do shelving (Amazon) – It is important to get THIS 18″x24″ footprint size to fit over any size mini-fridge. Each of the 5 shelves is adjustable, and you can set the bottom shelf at floor height and place the fridge on it for added stability.

The DormCo version is the same 18″x24″ footprint, but it is 6″ taller and includes 3 horizontal support braces to go around the bottom and allow your fridge to sit directly on the floor. Love this option, especially for taller fridges (over 32″) – it is just more expensive. This one comes in black, white or pink.

Please see the Vertical Kitchen How To article to learn why we don’t recommend over-toilet shelving for dorm kitchen spaces.

5) 3-Drawer Plastic Storage Towers & Carts – 2026 is an unusual year for these!

For the past 4 years, both Target and Walmart have had a solid selection of 3-drawer plastic towers and carts, both in-store and available for online shipping.

In 2026, things are very different:

Drawer Towers:

Walmart exclusively sells the weave-front drawer towers, and Target exclusively sells the stripe-front drawer towers. They are all made by Sterilite. You can find some 3rd parties selling these online at major retailers for a crazy markup – you should not pay more than $25 per cart. Do not buy from a company called Spreetail.

Target: No white or black drawer towers; only greige and vanilla (called snowfall), and those are only available in-store. If these are on your list, buy online asap for in-store pickup. These are only $25, don’t wait for a sale!

Walmart: As of late May, Walmart has one model available in white, gray, and espresso for shipping and for store pickup.

3-Drawer Carts

Our favorite for the back-to-back cart storage solution. You can find some 3rd parties selling on major retailers for a crazy markup – you should not pay more than $20 per cart. Do not buy from a company called Spreetail.

Target: Available in-store and online for store pickup only.

Walmart: None available currently.

6) Full XL Bedding

Full XL sizes are already hard to find, but finding them in the summer before dorm and college apartment season can be especially challenging.

Here are our recommendations for Full XL bedding layers for college:

7) Twin XL Toppers + Quality Bedding Selection

Manufacturers step up their Twin XL production for the summer college shopping season, but when inventory starts to dwindle, prices start going up and ultimately, sell out.

The well-rated, non-toxic Twin XL toppers are the first to sell out.

Mattress encasements are an optional protective layer that places the used dorm mattress into a sealed container, away from your student and their other bedding. Totally optional, but many like to zip that mattress away.

The thing is, dorm mattresses are thin, usually 5-8″ (whereas your home mattresses are 12-15″). So you need a shallow mattress encasement in order to create a snug fit on the mattress – an important step in keeping your topper from sliding around.

This Hospitology Mattress Encasement comes in an ultra-low profile for 6-8″ mattresses. It sells out in July every year.

8) Affordable Stainless Kitchen-Sized Trash Cans

Slim, kitchen-sized models that open on the narrow end are perfect for dorms—but the stainless trash cans tend to jump up in price or sell out. Some schools allow only metal trash cans for fire safety.

Plastic options tend to stay pretty price-stable, but if you’re shopping for metal/stainless, here are the affordable kitchen-sized trash cans to shop for sooner rather than later.

9) Target’s Seasonal Dorm Merchandise

Target has some great, affordable dorm options every year.

These super popular seasonal items – including much of their Twin XL bedding, cube organizers, drawer towers, $5-10 decor, and pillows – start in June (available June 14 in 2026), and the in-store inventory is mostly wiped out by mid-July (depending on the part of the country).

If you haven’t started the college student verification process to get the one-time 20% off Target storewide purchase coupon, no time like the present! The coupon typically runs from late June to September. Here is how we recommend using Target’s College Student Discount, including how to start the verification.

10) Favorite Shower Caddies

This 2-piece plastic shower caddy, popular thanks to its small, separate carry bin, perfect for toothbrushes, is a consistent sell-out. It is finally in stock again for 2026 and in 5 colors, but it won’t last!

11) Sleepyhead Mattress Toppers

Sleepyhead offers their best promotions during the off-season: Black Friday and late winter/early spring, see some great deals!

As we move from late spring into summer, the discount offers gradually decrease, often ending with only a Free Shipping offer by late summer.

We currently have exclusive promo codes that are valid through early June 2026, subject to change:

  • Take $60 off any topper with code TDG60.
  • Take 20% off any topper with code TDG20.

Visit this page to compare the 2 Sleepyhead models.

Check in with us in the Facebook group for current discount codes.

12) Large Hollywood Makeup Mirrors

This highly rated 18″x22″ mirror sells for as much as $90. The buy price is around $70, so if you see that price, don’t wait for a future sale, as these usually go in and out of stock during the summer months.

Smaller, less expensive options are usually pretty easy to find and won’t sell out or increase in price.

13) Dorm Rugs

Prices for popular sizes (5×7, 6×9, 8×10) fluctuate wildly year-round. While the rug market is not specific to the dorm shopping season, some popular styles and colors can be hard to find or get more expensive in the summer (thanks to college shopping demand).

These are 40 dorm rugs we ‘follow’ due to popularity for dorm rooms and college apartments. If you like a style, click on it to

Please see this article to learn more about the best rug size for your dorm room.

14) Command Hook Variety Packs

The variety is essential for uncertain room layouts and where decor will look best, but check your dorm rules on what is allowed for wall decor in your dorm first. If adhesive hooks are not permitted, but painters’ tape is, simply put a strip of painters’ tape on the wall, and then an adhesive hook on top. Voila!

The variety pack gives you flexibility on move-in day and can drop as low as $10 – but will likely hit $19 in August. Also available at Walmart. Don’t wait to buy these in store near the school, either!

15) Air Purifiers: Very few sales in the summer, not usually a sell-out risk

The best prices are usually in the spring or early summer. Actually, the BEST price is usually on Black Friday for those of you planning for future students!

These are some of our recommended air purifiers for dorm rooms:

  • Levoit 200S (white): Amazon (buy price $69.99) – Smart, app-enabled, perfect size for most dorm rooms.
  • Coway AirMega (white or black): Amazon (buy price $158) – Heavier-duty air cleaner for students with asthma or severe allergies.
  • PuroAir 240: Best value in 2-pack (the optimistic buy price for 1 is $130, for 2 for $250)
  • BLUEAIR: Great quality; the BLUEAIR 511a is a great option.

This article explains what to consider when buying air purifiers for dorm rooms. How to shop apples-to-apples on capacity/room size, what features to look for, and how to select a good model for dorm life, off-campus living, and beyond are all covered.

These are the 9 things we see consistently sell out year after year, and their prices may also climb as inventory dwindles until they sell out.

16) WOOZOO Fans

Only the 5-speed PCF-SC15T model is the true air circulator. The best price is almost always at Costco, where it sold out completely in 2022 and 2023. It did not sell out in 2024 or 2025. In-store pricing is ALWAYS better than online, and it always goes on sale for $10 off for about a month in April/early May. In 2026, the sale price seems to be holding into early June.

Best Buy is the only other seller of this WOOZOO fan model, sold NEW. If you see this model at other retailers, it is likely a lot more expensive and sold by a random 3rd party. That is often a fan that has been returned or liquidated.

17) Moving Bags: Very few sales, moderate price increases, some colors sell out

While the retail price may only go up a couple of dollars, the occasional sales on the popular VENO bags (8-pack) start to fade in early summer. Some colors may sell out (light blue and green). In 2026, they’ve steadily gone on sale during the last week of each month, and they may be included in Amazon Prime Day this June.

How many moving bags do you need for college? Can you fly with them as checked luggage? These questions and more are answered in this article about moving bags for college. They are definitely not just for freshman move-in!

18) Backpacks (Especially North Face)

If you’re looking for a North Face backpack, jump on any sales we post – they rarely go on sale. You can also visit a North Face outlet store if you live near one, as they sometimes have backpacks. To dig deeper for sales or additional color options:

A helpful North Face backpack comparison chart is in this post in the Dorm Shopping Recommendations & Deal Alerts Facebook group.

🔁 Final Tip: Buy With Return Policies In Mind

The challenge with the rising prices and sell-outs every year is the timing.

Buy too early before your actual dorm assignment? You may need to make some adjustments after receiving your dorm assignment.

The sweet spot is buying as soon as you receive your dorm assignment, especially if your move-in date is within the return window.

However, sometimes we need to take a leap of faith. Do all that you can to research your dorm, the layout, the measurements, and the rules. Make decisions early with the roommate on how you’ll arrange furniture and which items you’ll share.

In the event that something doesn’t work on move-in day, you can:

  • Ask the retailer for a late return exception or at least a store credit for the return
  • Hang onto the item for siblings heading to college in the future
  • Consider selling the item on Facebook Marketplace (brand-new, unused, highly sought-after dorm essentials are pretty easy to sell!)

Dorm Shopping 2026: Sellouts, Price Hikes and What To Buy Now
  1. Your tips are so great! Do you have any tips for what to fly with and what to buy once we get there? My son will be cross-country in NYC.

  2. Great ideas
    Thanks for your help

  3. You are terrific!! Your ideas are my reference. Can you suggest how to hang drapery rods when you can’t drill into the cinderblock walls? I am not sure command curtain hooks will hold 84″ block out curtains. The brackets that slide into the top of the blinds already on the window won’t allow for extending the rod beyond the window frame.
