DORM IQ #20: Dorm Room Rugs – How To Choose the Right Size, Type & Style

Dorm room rugs do more than just warm up a cold, echoey floor – they instantly make your space feel more comfortable, pulled together, and personal. But with so many sizes, styles, brands, and materials to choose from, it’s easy to get overwhelmed.

There are a few important things to consider: the right size, the best material, your school’s dorm rules, and whether it can survive spilled coffee and late-night snacks. This guide breaks down exactly how to choose the best dorm room rug for your space—plus our top trusted recommendations.

Spoiler alert. We NEVER think you should spend a lot on freshman dorm room rugs. Despite your student’s best initial intentions, the rug is going to have a rough year. Period. End of story. In our Dorm Shopping Recommendations Facebook group, we’ve helped thousands of families move in and out of dorms over the years – and maybe ONE rug looked great at the end of the year. Ok, maybe a few more, but not many!

Before we dive in, keep in mind that every college – and even each dorm on the same campus – has its own set of rules and restrictions. Sometimes these include limitations on the type or size of rug you’re allowed to bring or if you can bring one at all! Always check your dorm’s guidelines before making a purchase.

What Is The Best Size For Dorm Room Rugs?

There is not one standard size dorm room or layout, so that means there’s not a standard answer to this question. However, to give you a helpful visual starting point, we created a graphic of a 12′ x 18′ room which is a somewhat common dorm room size. The two beds on the back walls are pretty standard too, but there are variations everywhere!

Note that a Twin XL mattress is 39″ x 80″, so expect the bed to be about 42″ x 84″ allowing for the bed posts.

Here’s a quick explanation of dorm room rug sizes that tend to work best:

  • 5′ x 7′ Rugs: This size is popular for dorm rooms, offering decent coverage between the dorm beds.
  • 6′ x 9′ Rugs: This slightly larger size should enable the rug to sit under the legs of the bed, thereby helping it stay in place without using a rug pad. It should also cover most of the length of the beds.
  • 8′ x 10′ Rugs: If beds will be fully lofted, you’ll want to go with a larger rug to reach further under the beds into the hangout spaces.

If you’re still waiting on dorm assignment details, check your school’s housing website or ask in your college’s parent Facebook group for usual room measurements for freshman dorms.

Choose The Right Type Of Rug (Yes, There Are Wrong Types!)

Dorm rooms experience high foot traffic, lots of in-room snacking and students who don’t leave their shoes at the door, so selecting a durable and easy-to-clean rug material is crucial.

We ONLY recommend low-pile rugs as they are easier to vacuum and maintain. Avoid shag or fluffy rugs, as they tend to collect dirt, crumbs, and hair and are hard enough to vacuum with a good vacuum, let alone a dorm vacuum.

We do NOT recommend:

  • Shag or fluffy rugs – They may look cozy, but they trap every crumb, strand of hair, and bit of dirt. Many parents tell us they never make it past freshman year.
  • Rugs with fringe or tassels – Fringe and tassels are easily pulled by feet, furniture or vacuums and just cause trouble! There are some cute scalloped rugs to consider though (see below!).
  • Low quality washable rugs – While washable sounds great, be cautious as many low-cost options are so thin they feel like beach towels and aren’t vacuum-friendly.

For the best dorm room rugs, stick with trusted brands and look for rugs with 4.5-star reviews or higher based on 1,000+ reviews. Bonus if you find some that are OEKO-TEX® certified (no toxins) – we’ve listed several of these below.

Consider The Style Your Rug + Your Roommate

Your student’s rug doesn’t need to be an expensive statement piece, but it should complement the rest of the room. Rugs are one item that is typically shared with a roommate, so it is a good idea to have a discussion with your future roommate about who is bringing the rug before anyone starts shopping.

Dorm Room Rug Style Tips:

  • Choose neutral or mid-tone, or patterned rugs to help disguise dirt.
  • Avoid white or super light colors unless you’re okay tossing it at the end of the year.
  • Let the rug be the foundation – add personality with bedding, pillows, and wall decor.
  • Choose patterns carefully – a little personality is great, but avoid super-busy prints in small spaces.
  • Say no to fringe! It looks cute now, but it becomes a mess quickly.

Do I Need A Rug Pad?

Dorm floors are often slick, and a non-slip rug pad can make a big difference in keeping your rug from sliding. It can also help protect the floor and reduce the risk of damage assessments at the end of the year.

This non-slip rug pad is perfect for dorm room rugs because it can be trimmed to fit your exact rug size, and it is OEKO-TEX® certified (no toxins).

Do I Need A Rug If The Room Is Carpeted?

Great question! I’ve experienced 3 dorm rooms with my own kids over the years. The floors were wood parquet, linoleum and carpet.

I think the one that I MOST wanted the rug for was the carpeted room. There is only so clean that carpet can get after years in a dorm room.

So, personal preference of course, but don’t automatically skip the rug if your dorm room is carpeted.

Final Thoughts

A rug might not seem like an essential, but it can totally change the comfort level, not to mention the vibe of your student’s space. The right one adds warmth, comfort, and personality – without taking over the room or your budget.

Stick with something low-maintenance and affordable, and go in knowing that some just might not come back home in May, so keep the budget low.
