Most dorm desks don’t come with a hutch – but adding one can completely change how functional and organized your student’s desk setup feels. Before you start shopping, there are a few things worth knowing, starting with measurements, because getting the size wrong is the most common mistake we see. 4 Things To Consider When Shopping For A Desk Hutch

I think the biggest issue with desk hutches is finding options for smaller desks so I’ve included several options to consider in this article. This is something you should buy sooner than later as these definitely start selling out early!

1. Does your school already provide a desk hutch? Some schools have furniture with attached or detached hutches. It is not common, but they are out there.
2. Does your school allow outside furniture? A few restrict bringing any outside furniture.
3. Get the measurements for your desk. Hopefully, your school provides measurements on their website, but if not, search in a parent Facebook group for your school or contact the housing/residential life page.
4. Consider what your student will keep on their desk. Desks often serve as a study space, makeup/hair station and kitchen table. You may want the opening under the hutch to be tall enough to accommodate a computer monitor or specific makeup mirror.

If you have a smaller desk, an adjustable desk hutch may be a good choice. This one extends from 20″ to 40″ and has plenty of cubbies for storage. And this even smaller adjustable desk hutch extends from 14.76″ to 29.05″ and is only 16.5 ” tall, making it a good option if their desk is in front of a window, or they just want something simple.
