One of the most overlooked details when setting up a dorm room? Choosing a nightstand that’s the right height for your actual bed. Most dorms don’t provide a nightstand at all — and if they do, it’s usually only 24–28 inches tall, which works fine at home but will seem uncomfortably low next to a typical raised college bed.
Dorm beds aren’t like beds at home. Most have adjustable-height frames, and students usually raise them as high as possible to create space for storage underneath. The bed height you choose, or are assigned, will determine which nightstand options will work for you, so let’s break it down by bed height.

Depending on the bed frame and lofting options, you’ll have up to 5 bed height options. The space below the horizontal bed rail is the storage clearance.
To determine the sleep surface height, you’ll need to add the mattress thickness + the thickness of a planned mattress topper.
Dorm mattresses are thinner than those you have at home, usually 5-8″ thick. Most students will add a 2-3″ mattress topper above this, so the combination of these two, added to the bed height, will give you the distance from the sleep surface to the floor.
To determine your exact sleep surface height:
Add the clearance from the bed frame to the floor at your chosen or assigned bed height
+ Mattress thickness
+ Mattress topper thickness
| Bed Setting | Bed Height | Sleep Surface Height | Nightstand Approach |
|---|---|---|---|
| Low Height | 9-12″ clearance | 16-23″ | 20-24″ nightstand |
| Mid Height | 18-22″ clearance | 25″-33″ | 26-30″ nightstand |
| Captain’s Height / Semi-Lofted / Raised | 28-32″ clearance | 35-43″ | 37-45″ nightstand |
| Mid-Loft / Junior Loft | 55-60″ clearance | 62-71″ | 4 cube organizer, bed shelf or caddy |
| Fully Lofted or Upper Bunk | 66-71″ clearance | 73-82″ | 5 cube organizer, bed shelf or caddy |
Before you shop for a nightstand, please determine the following:
✅ Which height settings does your school allow? If lofted, check whether you need to submit a request or rent a loft kit in advance.
✅ Is there room next to the bed for a nightstand? Check the room layout.
✅ Are there restrictions on outside furniture or materials (fabric drawers, charging ports, etc.)?
✅ How will you get it to and from college? Lighter = easier o*n move-in day.
✅ What do you actually need at arm’s reach? Phone charger, water, lamp, book?
Please also keep in mind:
Check your school’s housing page to see whether they provide a nightstand. If your only option is a lower bed, a small nightstand may be provided.

At this height, your sleep surface will be in the 35-45″ range, depending on your dorm bed, mattress, and mattress topper. If you think about it, there are no ‘nightstands’ on the market for beds 40″ off the ground – this just doesn’t exist in the typical home furniture category.
While a few dorm-focused manufacturers offer tall, dorm-specific options, they tend to charge a premium. We’ve included a couple of those below, but most of the options are far more affordable.

The Fridge Bridge – A much more affordable fridge storage/shared nightstand option is a Fridge Bridge – a DIY shelving setup that places your mini fridge, microwave, and storage between the two beds and tops them with a shelf at roughly 43 inches high. This creates a shared dual nightstand surface for both students while also housing your kitchen setup. See our full fridge bridge materials and setup guide.

When your bed is 5–6 feet off the ground, you usually need to consider a solution that attaches to your bed rather than starts from the floor. But if you do have a little floor space next to the bed, there are a couple of tall storage solutions for you below, as well.
Before we jump into nightstands, PLEASE be sure your dorm provides a bed safety rail for these high beds. If they don’t, shame on them, but please be sure to bring your own bed safety rail.

If there isn’t room for a nightstand, some students use a slim sofa-console-style table or a king storage headboard running the length of the bed.
The DormCo options below are built just for this use.
The Amazon options below will work, too, and all come with charging ports, and some with lights. These are often not quite tall enough to get the shelves or storage above your sleep surface, but you can raise them off the floor and attach them with zip ties, using the same process as attaching a headboard to a dorm bed.
For reference, a Twin XL bed is 80″ long. A Twin is 75″ long.

If you have room to transport the assembled nightstand or bedside table, you’ll be glad it is done when you arrive in that small space with a million other things to do. This goes for anything that needs to be assembled. Plan to pack drawers or bins full, and use stretch wrap to keep drawers closed or bins in place.
If you are flying to college or don’t have room to transport the assembled nightstand, consider assembling it at your hotel or Airbnb if you are arriving early. If you assemble at the dorm on move-in day, just try to find an out-of-the-way spot in a common area, and leave the unpackers to do their work in the dorm room.
When you’re ready, be sure to read our detailed dorm move-in guide, including what to start a few weeks out, how to pack the car, and the 4-phase approach to move-in day.
