At The Dorm Guide, our goal is simple: to help families make confident, informed decisions about dorm and college life without wasting money, overbuying, or relying on generic advice.
Every product we recommend is shaped by structured research, hands-on testing, and real feedback from a highly engaged community of parents and students representing every type and size of school. We do not recommend products casually.
We know every dorm setup is different. While we’re college moms with experience across five schools, we also know that’s not nearly enough to represent every student’s situation. That’s why we don’t rely on our experience alone or assume that what worked in one dorm will work everywhere.
We use a research-driven, community-powered approach to evaluating dorm products and solutions.
I’m Lara, founder of The Dorm Guide community, and a research enthusiast. What began four years ago while preparing my oldest for college has grown into a mission to help families navigate dorm and college life with clarity, organization, and smarter spending.
Jessica joined me in 2024. Together, we bring professional business and project management backgrounds, a strong research discipline, and a shared commitment to safety, usability, and value.
Our recommendations are shaped by three key inputs: real-time feedback from thousands of parents and students, hands-on product testing inside our home dorm lab, and defined product, safety, and quality standards.
Between us, we’ve supported four students through three large SEC universities, a small liberal arts college, and a mid-size state school. We’ve navigated hall baths, suite-style dorms with private baths, furnished and unfurnished apartments, athletics, Greek life, transfers, academic challenges, internships, and job searches.
This isn’t casual advice. It’s lived experience supported by tens of thousands who've provided feedback over the years.
To ensure our recommendations reflect real dorm life - not just online research - we built a full dorm room inside my home.
The dorm lab includes two adjustable-height dorm beds, various nightstands, a standard dorm desk with hutch, multiple under-bed storage configurations, and different options for mini kitchen and food prep stations. We can layer in lighting, décor, rugs, and boy/girl variations to mimic several realistic dorm setups.
This allows us to evaluate fit and spacing, storage compatibility, assembly difficulty, durability under daily use, outlet access, electrical safety, and overall dorm room aesthetic and functionality.
We photograph, film, and reconfigure products and solutions so families can see how items actually perform - not just how they appear in staged marketing photos.
If a product creates clutter, wastes space, feels flimsy, or doesn’t function well in a real dorm setup, it does not make our recommendation list.

Our recommendations go through multiple layers of review.
We are honored to host a large community of dorm-experienced and dorm-bound families. Our Facebook group members post challenging questions and provide such helpful feedback to us and to each other.
These real-world experiences help us understand what students actually use after move-in, what gets returned or abandoned, what repeatedly causes frustration, and what consistently earns positive feedback.
We consider ourselves the repository of ALL of this data, and we love that our group members and social members keep us on our toes with unique situations and both positive and negative product feedback. This creates an ongoing feedback cycle that helps us keep our recommendations up to date.
Before testing begins, we evaluate products against baseline criteria. In most cases, products must have at least 1,000 verified customer reviews and an average rating of 4.5 stars or higher. High review volume helps us confirm consistent performance across many dorms and students - not just isolated positive experiences.
We also assess materials and construction quality, reusability beyond freshman year, space efficiency, assembly requirements, and brand reliability.
Safety is not optional - especially when it comes to bedding, sleep products, food prep items, and electrical products.
For bedding and textiles in particular, we apply specific requirements. We prioritize clear material disclosure, low-toxicity or non-toxic construction whenever possible, and transparent manufacturing standards.
When evaluating textiles and sleep products, we look for recognized third-party certifications such as OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 for fabrics and CertiPUR-US® certification for foam products like mattress toppers and pillows. These certifications help verify that materials have been tested for harmful substances and meet established safety standards.
Whenever comparable options exist, we give strong preference to products made in the USA due to higher regulatory oversight and manufacturing transparency.
We do not recommend products that rely on vague marketing claims without substantiation. Dorm rooms are small, enclosed spaces where students sleep, study, and live every day. We believe families deserve clarity about what their students are bringing into that environment.
Safety, transparency, and quality come before trend or price - always.
Products that meet our screening standards are then tested inside our dorm lab. We examine features such as proper dorm mattress fit, heat retention and comfort, storage compatibility, structural integrity, and durability with realistic daily use.
If something sheds excessively, traps heat, compresses quickly, breaks down under light use, or creates layout issues, it does not pass.

Dorm products change frequently. We regularly re-check availability, replace discontinued items, monitor updated reviews, and adjust recommendations based on community feedback.
We treat our guides as living resources - not static lists. And definitely not as checklists.
You will not find a universal dorm checklist here.
Every dorm is different. Every school has different rules. Every student has different needs.
Generic checklists often lead to overbuying, wasted money, and less reliable products that haven't been tested or meet non-toxic criteria.
Instead, we teach families how to build a personalized dorm list based on their specific school, their actual room layout, their student’s habits and lifestyle, and our list of recommended trusted products..
Most students need far less than traditional dorm lists suggest. Our Dorm Essentials Guide is designed to help families think critically - not purchase blindly.
We monitor pricing across Amazon, Target, Walmart, and other key retailers for products we have already researched and approved. We only recommend buying from retailers we trust and always avoid those with difficult return policies, shady business practices, or copyright infringement concerns.
A product being on sale is never enough reason to recommend it. We track seasonal price patterns, major sale events, and true discounts versus inflated list pricing. Deals are shared only when they are actually deals on items that already meet our standards.
We share our finds across Facebook, Instagram, our Amazon, Target and Walmart storefronts and here on our website.
Some links on our website and in social media are affiliate links. If you choose to purchase through those links, we may earn a small commission at no additional cost to you.
Affiliate relationships do not influence which products we recommend. We do not accept payment in exchange for positive coverage or inclusion in our recommendations. Every product must meet our research and testing standards before it is recommended.
All consumer products can be subject to recalls or revised safety guidance.
We encourage families to register purchases with manufacturers, monitor official announcements from the Consumer Product Safety Commission, and follow proper usage and safety guidelines.
If we see that any products we've ever recommended have a recall, we will communicate via social media and temporarily remove that item from our recommendations.
Our mission is to remove stress, reduce waste, and help families make smarter dorm decisions.
That means clear standards, hands-on testing, real community input, and a refusal to recommend products that don’t hold up in real life.
We are constantly listening, testing, refining, and improving.
Because dorm rooms may be small, but the decisions families make for this important stage of life are big.
Thank you for joining us on your journey - we are always open to your feedback and suggestions!
