You don’t have to buy these dorm essentials, but if they are on your list, the best place to buy them is at Walmart.
These are either items exclusive to Walmart OR items with a much lower for the exact same item that you’ll find elsewhere.
Here are the 17 best Walmart dorm essentials for 2026 – seriously, do not buy these elsewhere!
Be sure to read to the end to see the items to shop at Target, Kohl’s and IKEA, too.

You just can’t buy a rolling laundry hamper anywhere else for anywhere close to this price. Great size, extremely sturdy, and incredible price! Many in our Dorm Shopping Facebook group are using this in their last of college, and it is still going strong.
If your dorm laundry room is on your floor or accessible by elevator, this is a great option. If you have to take the stairs, I’d recommend a backpack laundry hamper.

But it might sell out! 39″ tall charging nightstand, currently available in white or dark gray.
3 sturdy drawers, an open shelf, and the top has 1 outlet, 1 USB-A and 1 USB-C port.

The plastic 3-drawer storage towers are a dorm-room storage staple. The weave pattern is only available at Walmart, and if you want white or dark this year, it is only available there. These come separated for easier shipment, but they are very easy to assemble, no tools required.
Target is strangely only selling these for in-store pickup this year, and only in greige and snowfall colors.
If you want a drawer tower shipped to you or your school in 2026, Walmart is the only retailer that offers shipping. There are some aftermarket sellers offering shipping at a ridiculous markup over Walmart and Target, but there is no reason to pay 2-4x for plastic storage drawers. Max spend is $25 for these.

I step on one of these boucle cloud ottomans all the time in the dorm room in my house that we use for testing, and it is very sturdy. It does open to store things inside, and the lid is very thick wood, making it a good option for stepping up to a captain-height bed and for a little extra storage.

If you’re allowed to bring a microwave to your dorm room, most schools limit either by size or wattage.
A .7 cu ft/700 watt microwave is the smallest on the market, and it often doesn’t get great ratings because at 700 watts, it doesn’t have a lot of power, so it is slow.
I don’t recommend spending a lot of money on this item for dorm life, and this is both the best-priced and best-rated option you will find. It is currently available in black, red and white, although the red and white models tend to sell out as we get deeper into dorm shopping season.

This smaller, lightweight footlocker is the perfect size for dorm and college life. Just add a padlock to turn it into large locking storage for all of your valuables including gaming consoles, laptops, over-ear headphones and other larger valuables.
You can thread a bike lock through a handle to tether it to your bed and keep it in your room.

A sturdy wagon is a staple for both college moves and grocery runs when you park from where you live (dorms & apartments)! It is hard to find this sized wagon anywhere close to or under $50. This is 32.7″ x 18.7″ x 24″ – be sure to compare that to others if you’re comparing prices elsewhere.

This 44.5″ tall 8-drawer wood dresser is a popular option for dorm rooms. These are sometimes used as the base for the fridge bridge as well.
Very similar to the 9-drawer IKEA Alex dresser, but at a better price, this is currently available in 3 other colors – gray, black and blue.

This memory foam futon is highly rated by our Facebook group and available in 5 colors.
A pillow-top futon option available in charcoal.
Don’t have 70″ under a fully lofted bed, but need a place for guests to sleep? This 56″ sleeper loveseat is a low price every day.

We love to use 3-cube organizers as the base for our Fridge Bridge. The only place to find the sturdy 13″ 3-cube organizers is Walmart.
These can also be used as a stand-alone nightstand or for narrow storage elsewhere in your dorm or college apartment.

5-cube organizers are a good option to place next to a fully lofted dorm bed, as the top should be a good height to use as a bedside table, with 5 generous 13″ square cubes available for storage below.

You truly can’t beat the everyday price on this quality 40″ Roku TV – a great size for a dorm room.

If your dorm rules allow for up to a 5.0 cubic foot mini-fridge (that’s not so mini!), this 4.6 cubic foot mini-fridge is the best option for that size limit.

This 4-quart air fryer has the convenience of digital touch-control and the reliability of Ninja in a smaller 4-qt size great for dorms (check your rules, though!) and college apartments. 4 cool colors available, too.

For students who enjoy an occasional iced coffee, the Keurig K-Express Essentials Plus is the least expensive option for iced and hot coffee, and it is exclusively available at Walmart.

True to their name, Beautiful Appliances are also highly rated, affordable, and available in unique eye-pleasing colors. This is a Drew Barrymore brand, exclusive to Walmart, and makes a perfect treat for a new apartment.
This is the super affordable digital 4-quart crockpot shown.

A quality dinnerware set for college with only the pieces they need. 4.6* rated and only about $1.15 per piece. Dishwasher and microwave-safe stoneware. Amazing deal!
